Lost Reyes

Los Reyes
3024 Covington Pike
Memphis, TN 38128

Friday night is slowly becoming a tradition for grabbing some food and going out to do something active. This past Friday, we settled on Los Reyes in Raleigh and bowling in Bartlett afterward. I remember going here several years ago with my parents when I much younger. My folks loved it and I have heard great reviews about it ever since. There are several good Tex-Mex places in town, especially on Stage Rd in the surrounding area, so we decided to give Los Reyes a try. It turned out to be a bad decision.

When we sat down, we were served a trio of salsas, all in small bowls, together on one rack. One was white and wasn't very good. The others were normal blends but the bowls were half the size of the chips so it wasn't easy to enjoy. I usually eat my fair share of salsa before my meal but it quickly came to my attention that asking for more would be a bigger hastle than it was worth. The menu was large and detailed. I settled on enchiladas while everyone else got an order of fajitas. I then noticed on the menu that they had habanero hot wings. I had to try them, even though I knew my meal was already more than I should eat. Our waiter didn't speak english so it wasn't easy getting the wings added to my order. I was hoping they would come before our meals but the direct opposite occured. They came to the table shortly after our dishes so I had to eat both together. I was impressed with their appearance but that was it. Overcooked and more sweet than heat. I highly doubt any habaneros were used in this sauce. Either that, or the non-english-speaking waiter messed up my order.

I usually give every establishment the benefit of the doubt and review places as positively as I can. I also realize that most Mexican food is not spicy and the restaurants aren't known for great hot wings. Despite it all, the Simple Green smelling dining area to the illiterate, slow waiter to the bland food made me think badly about Los Reyes. I highly doubt we will return when there are much better places down the street for Mexican food and wings with a zip.

  1. Try Los Pilares on Stage Rd. If it's as good as its Millington restaurant, I believe you'll like it. Anyway, I hope to see you this weekend at the Best Memphis Burger Fest.
