Date night brought us to the Germantown area last night and to a place I have wanted to try out ever since a BMM fan suggestion a while back. We were also in the mood for some good Chinese so we made our way to Tao Too. Located in a shopping center off West St, just on the other side of Poplar and Farmington Blvd, in Germantown is this neat little Chinese restaurant. Before catching a movie nearby, we made our way in to satisfy our Chinese crave and to see if they could burn my mouth as suggested.
Upon walking in just before 6pm, I instantly noticed that we beat the dinner crowd, which was good because our movie started at 7. We sat down and glanced over the menu. I noticed lots of spicy meals, marked by images of flames that leveled from 1 to 3. The only level 3 on the menu was the Devil's Nest soup, which is a big bowl of chicken dumpling soup nested in a bed of thick noodles and lots of other goodies. We started with some crab wontons and egg drop soup. For our main course we ordered orange peeled shrimp and, of course, a bowl of Devil's Nest soup.
Our ordered was quickly prepared. As it was brought to our table, I took in the amazing aroma and appearance of the soup. It was very similar to pho soup, but with more of a Chinese touch. Within the broth were onions, carrots, cabbage, cauliflower, jalapenos, and fresh herbs. All was topped with 3 different kinds of chili sauce which made a large mound above the surface of the soup. I grabbed my spoon and stirred it all in together with the broth. It instantly blended in; making a reddish tint that gave it a powerful, spicy look. I tried the broth first and enjoyed the blend of sweet, fresh herbs, veggies, chicken and chili sauce. With my chopsticks, I then cut a dumpling in half, letting the broth soak into it. This gave the dumpling a kick which further put it in the category of one of the best dumplings I have ever had. The heat from the soup started to kick in about half way through and, although continuously stirring, was quite powerful at the end. Not caring about the future, I finished every last drop of this amazing soup and ended a very satisfied customer. It wasn't super hot and I didn't break a sweat but I will say that this was one of the best bowls of soup I have ever had. A great dining experience all the way around will, without a doubt, result in a return from us!
