Although Memphis doesn't have the usual, well-known taco shops, such as Chipotle, we are blessed to have a few local establishments that serve great tacos and gigantic burritos. The type of place where they make your order right in front of you, which is good for me considering how hot I like my food. If I desire more heat, I ask them to pile on whatever they have to offer. My favorite of these local shops is Swanky's Taco Shop in Germantown. Although they have great tacos and burritos, they also have the best salad in all of Memphis. Meat choices range from pork, shredded chicken, steak and beef. The shredded chicken is outstanding on lettuce with a combination of so many things that go great together. Rice, beans, cheese, sour cream, olives, guacamole, corn, tomatoes, cilantro, onions, banana peppers, jalapenos, pico de dallo and chips. For dressings, your choices are ranch or balsamic vinaigrette. For heat, they have ranchero (mild), tomatillo (medium) and the hot, an amazing roasted habanero sauce.

I usually ask for a healthy serving of both the hab sauce and jalapenos. The salad isn't over-powerfully hot but it does have a kick. What it does have, though, is a flavor like no other. I usually get the vinaigrette dressing because it adds a unique twist with the above ingredients. The guys at Swanky's will pile it on for you, too, which is another reason why this salad tops the charts. I have yet to finish entire bowl of this Mexican paradise. I have had a consistent experience at Swanky's, which has always been great. The service is quick, friendly and professional. The usual visit for me is for lunch but it's also a great place to hit after hours for a cold beer with your taco, burrito or salad. A staple to the Memphis cuisine, Swanky's Taco Shop keeps it original and is always worth a visit to the East side.
