A recent dining and craft brew-indulging quest led a friend and I to Young Avenue Deli in Midtown. Oddly, this was the first time I have ever been there. I love Midtown but, in all honesty, I haven't gone to a lot of places there like other spots around Memphis. However, in the last year or so, I have. I can now mark Young Avenue Deli off my list of places to check out and I will be back many, many times.
The first thing I noticed was all the beer they have on tap. I was focused on a big beer tap section, or in other words, Miller-Bud-Coors. I was then directed to the tap of my dreams. Lots of good craft beer with the brand new addition of Stone IPA. That just so happens to be one of my favorite brews and I have only had it on tap in Southern Cali. They also had several other beers that I could easily enjoy and that I have never found anywhere else in Memphis. I was a happy man.
I was told that they have a really hot habanero hot wing and have been itching to come here to see what that was all about. I asked the bartender if they would burn my mouth but she told me they were more sweet than hot. Disappointed, I looked for something else on the menu. She quickly told me they have a sandwich that has smoked turkey marinated in hot sauce with pepper jack cheese melted all over it. Piled on are banana and jalapeno peppers then spread down with some spicy mustard. The Heat Miser. (I believe this was a character on one of those Christmas claymation movies that melted things with his touch.) I asked for extra peppers and fries. It was out within minutes and I'm sure had it down in within the same amount of time. Although it wasn't extremely hot, it did have a great bite towards the end. More importantly, it was fantastic. I believe for the majority of people out there, this would be pretty spicy and it's a perfect amount of heat in order to enjoy the entire sandwich. With more fries than I could eat, this was a perfect choice to accompany my Stone IPA. I highly recommend this sandwich AND the Young Avenue Deli to everyone who likes quality beer and eats!
